In case you missed it, here's a review of all of the selections of the Player of the Week for football 2003 in Chicago.

  2003 Players of the Week

Week 14 (Dec 1)

Offense - Vashon Winton & Sinque Turner, Simeon - the senior QB/RB tandem connected on the lone passing touchdown for the Public League champion Wolverines - a 39-yard strike in the 1st quarter - as Simeon dropped its fourth Prep Bowl, a 22-14 verdict ve. (Wilmette) Loyola. Winton threw a Prep Bowl 2nd-best 245 yards while Turner caught three passes for 69 yards.

Defense - Clinton Conners, Simeon - The senior LB recorded 10 tackles, including a game-high nine solo, in Simeon's 22-14 loss to Loyola at the Prep Bowl.


Week 12 (Nov 17)

PUBLIC LEAGUE
Offense (2) - Charles Berry, Hubbard - the sophomore was instrumental in sending the Greyhounds to their third CPL title game since 1998 with three rushing TDs in a 40-0 win over Hyde Park; Hubbard has scored 90 straight points in the city post-season series.

Vashon Winton, Simeon - the All-City QB threw 2 second-half TD scores to help Simeon upset #2 Harper 36-18 and reach the title game; the win gives coach Al Scott 262 victories, one behind current active leader Terry Lewis of Harper.

Defense (2) - Nicholas Allen and Tommario Minor, Simeon - The senior linebacker and defensive back were instrumental in securing a 36-18 upset over #2 Harper; Allen had a 62-yard interception return for a TD while Minor recorded two more picks.



CATHOLIC LEAGUE

Offense - Wade Weyer, St. Rita- The junior QB earns a record third time as P-O-W for his efforts in a 28-20 win over (Lisle) Benet in the Class 7A Elite 8; the reigning ISNet Super 7/Catholic League Player of the Year had all 4 scores en route to 209 rushing yards on a 7A playoff record 47 carries, sending the Mustangs to their third straight state Final Four berth.

Defense - Pat Harrigan, Brother Rice - The senior LB recorded two key interceptions in the fourth quarter as the Crusaders rallied back to upend Hinsdale Central 24-21 in the Class 8A Elite 8; the win puts the Crusaders in the state semifinals for the first time since 1985.



Week 11 (Nov 10)

PUBLIC LEAGUE

Offense - Tremayne Akons, Hyde Park - the senior's two TD passes in the fourth quarter sparked a late comeback as the Chicago Conference champion Indians upset Red Bird division champ Steinmetz 24-20 in the CPL playoffs; with the win, the Indians make their first-ever appearance in the Final Four.

Defense (3) - Nathan Lyles and Domonique Bryson, Hubbard - The senior defensive backs had two interceptions each as the Greyhounds hed off Lane Tech 14-0 in the CPL playoffs; as a result, Hubbard makes its third appearance in the CPL Final Four in the last six seasons.

Morgan Park - A team ball goes to the Mustangs' defense as their fourth-quarter heroics helped M-P upset (Darien) Hinsdale South 18-16 in the Class 7A playoffs; the win earns Morgan Park its first-ever trip to the state Elite 8, giving the Public League its third appearance in the last four years.

CATHOLIC LEAGUE

Offense - Dan Daigler, Mount Carmel - The junior QB had three total touchdowns (2 rushing) to help the Caravan throttle (Oak Park) Fenwick 42-0 in the Catholic League playoffs; Mount Carmel has scored a city playoff-record 179 consecutive points since its 2001 Prep Bowl championship run.

Defense - Tony Serio, Brother Rice - The senior LB recorded 11 game-high tackles to life the Crusaders over Downers Grove South 17-0 in the Class 8A playoffs; the win gives Brother Rice its first Elite 8 appearance since taking second in Class 6A in 1985.



Week 10 (Nov 3)

PUBLIC LEAGUE

Offense - Demetrius Jones, Morgan Park - the sophomore threw for 277 yards and a TD in a 42-28 Class 7A playoff win over Batavia. Jones' pass yardage sets a new Public League 7A playoff record, missing the state record in 7A by 4 yards.

Defense - Lance Jones, Hyde Park - Jones' game-high 10 tackles helped the Indians hold off Taft 14-12 to win the Chicago Conference championship, the school's first major football title since 1903.

CATHOLIC LEAGUE

Offense - Jerry Marin, Brother Rice - The senior RB scored 2 TD runs and 156 rushing yards on 18 carries to lift the Crusaders over Harvey Thornton 24-12 in 8A playoff action.

Defense - Pat Comiskey, St. Rita - The senior LB had two sacks and helped force four turnovers as the Mustangs stopped Simeon in 7A playoff action, 24-8.



Week 9 (Oct 27)

PUBLIC LEAGUE

Offense - Justin Anderson, Steinmetz - 4 total TDs (3 passing) in 47-6 defeat of Fenger; Anderson's rushing TD gives him a school-record 30 for his career and gives the Silver Streaks a second-straight 9-0 start.

Defense - Steve Tucker, Westinghouse - State-record 8 sacks helps the Warriors beat Crane 50-0 to earn first state playoff berth since 1994; Tucker's record eclipses Lane Tech's Aaron Marshall (1992) by 2 sacks.

CATHOLIC LEAGUE

Offense - Joe Wroblewski, Gordon Tech- School-record five rushing TDs helps the Rams keep (Burbank) St. Laurence out of the state playoffs 34-18; it's Wroblewski's second P-O-W mention and his 450 rushing yards are 4th-best all-time in Illinois for a single game.

Defense - Freddie DeRamus, St. Rita - Earned 2 of 9 sacks for Mustang defense in toppling Brother Rice 30-0 to earn first Chicago Catholic League division title since the CCL returned to football this year.



Week 8 (Oct 20)

PUBLIC LEAGUE

Offense - Anthony Lewis, Curie - Four total TDs (2 passing) in 54-46 defeat of Chicago Vocational; win secures Illini Conference playoff spot for Curie

Defense (2) - Byron Miles & Sam Porter, Morgan Park - Combined 13 tackles (Miles 7 solo) in 47-0 upset win of Hubbard; helped hold Hubbard to state record -60 yards offense and Public League record -55 yards rushing offense

CATHOLIC LEAGUE

Offense - Dan Nicholson, Rice - Career-high 5 TD passes and 268 yards in 40-0 trouncing of De LaSalle.

Defense - Mike Vianisi, Mt Carmel - 3rd quarter INT sparked a 20-0 second-half run to help Mt Carmel topple (Wilmette) Loyola 27-7 and earn 18th straight playoff berth.



Week 7 (Oct 13)

PUBLIC LEAGUE

Offense (2) - Mike Fritzler, Taft - 5 total TDs (four rushing) in 33-8 win over Orr; as a result, Taft clinches Second City championship.

Jason Williams, DuSable - 4 total TDs (three passing) in passing in 30-20 defeat of Roosevelt; as a result, DuSable clinches Intra-City Central title.

Defense (2) - Chris Patterson, Hubbard - All-American LB records three sacks in 20-12 win over Simeon.

Keon Cummings, Lincoln Park - Four sacks, 14 tackles in 14-6 win over South Shore.

CATHOLIC LEAGUE

Offense (2) - Tom Rhein & Jerry Martin, Brother Rice. Rhein's 52-yard catch in the 4th quarter set up Martin's game winning 1-yard TD run as the Crusaders upset Mt. Carmel 13-3, their second win over the defending state champs since 1980.

Defense - Brother Rice: entire defense held Mt. Carmel to 73 yards rushing and forced three turnovers.



Week 6 (Oct 6)

PUBLIC LEAGUE

Offense - Kevin Sabbs and Jalan Heard, Robeson- Sabbs set school single-game record with six total TDs (4 receiving); Hearn tied school single-game record with 5 TD passes, set Public League single-game record with 26.8 yards per completion average (10-of-20, 268 yards). Both marks set during 54-14 win over Collins.

Defense - Marques Walton, Hubbard- set school single-game record with four sacks while earning game high 11 tackles in 28-0 win over Mather; as a result, Hubbard - currently on CPL modern-day record 24-game regular-season win streak - earns 13th state berth, including all nine seasons under coach Elton Harris.


CATHOLIC LEAGUE

Offense - Wade Weyer, St Rita- 111 yards and TD on 28 carries in 24-7 win over state champ Mt. Carmel; as a result, first win for St Rita against M-C since 1994 (first regular season win since 1989). St. Rita also 6-0 for first time since 1963 national championsip year.

Defense - Tom Rhein, Brother Rice- INT in 9-2 victory over (Wilmette) Loyola; Rice 6-0 for first time since returning to Chicago Catholic Football League



Week 5 (Sep 29)

PUBLIC LEAGUE

Offense - James Wright, Harper- Four TDs in six carries in 62-0 shutout of Prosser.

Defense - Terrance Sirleaf, Westinghouse- 8 tackles, two sacks, two forced fumbles in 26-0 shutout of Austin.

CATHOLIC LEAGUE

Offense - Akeem Hunter, Leo - Four TDs and 144 yards rushing in 43-27 victory over Gordon Tech; Leo 4 wins in season for first time since Catholic Metro Red championship seasons in 1996-97.

Defense - Tim Killeen, Mt. Carmel - three sacks, 11 tackles in 42-6 win over De LaSalle; Killeen leads team with 8 sacks


Week 4 (Sep 22)

PUBLIC LEAGUE

Offense - Luis Ramos, Payton- a game the school's namesake - Walter Payton - would have loved; school records of 327 rushing yards and 5 TDs in a 42-34 double-overtime upset of previously unbeaten Tilden. The rushing yards puts Ramos 7th all-time for a single game in Chicago Public League history and makes him the second rusher this season to crack the CPL single-game all-time Top 10.

Defense - Artnez Jenkins, Hope- 7 tackles and 2 INTs in 50-0 shutout of Orr; as a result, Hope has collected 12 consecutive victories since the program started last year.

CATHOLIC SCHOOLS

Offense - Mike Cummings, St. Rita - 5-for-5 passing, 157 yards/3 TDs in 48-0 rout of Hales Franciscan; St. Rita 4-0 for first time in 10 years.

Defense - Jose Camacho, St. Francis deSales - Two fumble recoveries in the Pioneers' first win of the season, a 20-12 verdict over Alden-Hebron



Week 3 (Sep 15)

PUBLIC LEAGUE

Offense (2) - RB Steve Embry, Harper - 3 TDs in 48-0 shutout of Collins; as a result, Harper is only team in Chicago yet to be scored upon.
WR Bryant Creamer, Simeon - 2 TD catches/178 receving yards in 38-12 upset of Lane Tech.

Defense - LB Benny Alvarez, Lake View - 12 tackles and 2 INTs in 20-6 defeat of Kelvyn Park


CATHOLIC SCHOOLS

Offense (2) - WR Tom Dwyer, Brother Rice - 3 TD catches (7-194) in 42-0 blanking of Gordon Tech
RB Brian Palascak, Marist - 263 rushing yards and 3 TDs in 40-0 win over St. Viator

Defense - DL Tim Killeen, Mt. Carmel - Four sacks in 27-0 blowout of (Kankakee) McNamara


Week 2 (Sep 8)

PUBLIC LEAGUE- Offense: Quentin Cooper, Englewood - Public League record 482 yards, record tying 7 TDs in 60-28 win against Amundsen
Defense: Vincent Walker, Calumet - 3 sacks in 38-6 win over Kennedy

CATHOLIC SCHOOLS- Offense: Jeremy Stephens, St. Patrick - 2 TDs, including game winner with 3:34 left, to topple (Niles) Notre Dame 20-16
Defense: Stephen Benjamin, Leo - INT in 57-0 win over Hales Franciscan; as a result, Leo remains only Chicago Catholic League yet to be scored upon


Week 1 (Sep 2)

PUBLIC LEAGUE- Offense: Robert Hughes, Hubbard - 164 yds/4 TDs vs. Hyde Park in 61-14 win
Defense: Chad Nishibayashi, Taft - 2 INT (1 return for TD) in 31-6 win over Lincoln Park

CATHOLIC SCHOOLS- Offense: Joe Wroblewski, Gordon Tech - 6 TDs rushing in win over Hales Franciscan
Defense: Nick Holloran, Mount Carmel - 2 INT (1 return for TD) in win over Morgan Park
